Laura’s Log Cabin
Early settlers built this little log cabin in 1924. Edith Wolford, one of Black Forest’s first schoolteachers lived there and taught at the one-room log schoolhouse nearby. Almost a century later, Laura fulfilled her life-long dream to live in a Colorado cabin and shared it with friends and family for four happy years. When the Black Forest wildfire swept through this small community in 2013, it took two lives, burned over 14,000 acres and destroyed 500 homes, including Edith and Laura’s cabin.

Black Abert’s Squirrel
The Abert’s Squirrel is unique to the Colorado Plateau and southern Rocky Mountains of Colorado, Utah, Arizona and New Mexico. The squirrel is named after Colonel John James Abert, an American naturalist and military officer who organized the effort to map the American West in the 19th century. This playful creature prefers the cool, dry Ponderosa pine forests, Colorado pinyon, junipers, quaking aspen and Douglas fir. They are easily recognized for their ear tufts and in Colorado’s Rocky Mountain foothills, are black in color.

Rocky Mountain Elk Calves
The elk, or wapiti, is one of the largest species of the deer family. Elk calves are born late May to early June and weigh about 35 pounds. No other land mammals in north America and Eastern Asia are larger than elk. Bulls (males) weigh 600-850 lbs and stand 5 ft. high at the shoulder. Cows (females) are 4.3 ft. high and weigh 510-530 lbs. Elk live 10-13 years in the wild and are highly social, communicating with chirps, mews and squeals.
